Rocky Mountain CFS/ME & FM Association Joins in Distributing
ME/CFS Awareness Public Service Announcement Video
May 3, 2011 - Denver, Co- In May, for ME/CFS Awareness Month, the Rocky Mountain CFS/ME & FM Association is joining other organizations in distributing a television public service announcement that shows this disease afflicts 1 million Americans and 17 million worldwide.
ME/CFS, which is also called chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome and myalgic encephalomyelitis, is estimated to affect at least 156,000 Colorado residents, based on prevalence studies. ME/CFS is more prevalent than Lung cancer, Leukemia and AIDS combined and receives a fraction of the funding.
ME/CFS patients are often confined to wheelchairs or become bedbound. Common symptoms include profound exhaustion after performing simple tasks, neurological and cognitive dysfunction, and severe daily flu-like symptoms.
Many, including some pediatricians, are not aware that ME/CFS strikes children, often robbing them of their dreams of a productive and active life.
"ME/CFS is a highly misunderstood and severe illness," said Mike Munoz, president of the Rocky Mountain CFS/ME & FM Association. "Making the public aware of the large number of patients affected and severity of this illness is an important step."
In May, ME/CFS patient organizations across the nation will be testifying before the federal Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Advisory Committee, making visits to congressional offices and placing ads in newspapers to bring attention to NeuroEndocrineImmune diseases, including Gulf War illness, chronic Lyme disease, fibromyalgia, multiple chemical sensitivity / environmental illness and ME/CFS
